Quick thinking from an alert port operator and assistance from a passing boat and the police has saved a drifting yacht from crashing onto rocks or colliding with a passing vessel.
In December a Flinders Ports employee noticed a yacht drifting across the entry to the Outer Harbor breakwater with no visible sign of life onboard.
After unsuccessfully trying to reach the vessel via radio, a passing yacht offered to help and the police were alerted.
The sole sailor, who had been sleeping below deck at the time, was woken before the yacht came to grief.
It appears the vessel’s anchor had broken and the yacht had been drifting from north of the northern breakwater, across the channel towards North Haven, narrowly missing two breakwaters.
