Half of checked boats not compliant

16 January 2012

Yorkes Almost half of boats checked during a New Year operation in the Yorke Peninsula breeched safety regulations and unnecessarily risked the lives of their occupants.

During Operation Yorkes between 2 and 9 January, department Transport Safety Compliance Officers worked with Fisheries Compliance Officers to check 421 vessels.
The checks at boat ramps and on the water found a staggering 195 vessels weren’t compliant – a rate of more than 46 per cent.
The majority of breeches were for not carrying correct safety equipment, especially current flares, and not correctly and clearly displaying all round mast headlights.
The unnecessary risks people are taking is very concerning, Director, Transport Safety Regulation, Brian Hemming said.
“The water can be a lonely and dangerous place if even the smallest thing goes wrong,” he said.
“Safety equipment such as life jackets, flares and fire extinguishers are required because experience shows these items will give you a fighting chance if you encounter trouble.
“To ignore this advice and the legal obligations – based on years of boating experience and countless lost lives –is simply reckless.
“Please check out what you need to carry before your next trip – and if you’re not sure just ask rather than risk a life.”
