Safety first this spring

It’s a remarkable time in South Australia’s recent marine history – we’ve been fatality free for more than 18 months now and we’re determined to continue this trend over the spring and summer.

So how are we keeping our noses clean? Well, it’s you the boatie that has done the right thing to stop deaths happening on our waters by following the rules and keeping yourselves and your passengers safe from harm.

That’s not to say that there haven’t been close calls and injuries. We still have plenty of hard work to do and need to stay ever vigilant.

We’ll continue to work to support and keep you informed about how to stay safe on the water, particularly via our Marine Safety Compliance Officers who work tirelessly across the State. Our strong presence at boating and marine events will help spread the word about safety and the laws and regulations that support it.

We have launched a powerful new marine radio service that can help emergency services locate and communicate with boaties in difficulties.

New webcams deployed in key locations across the State, with the most recent at West Beach, allow you to see the prevailing conditions at the click of a button.

And we’ve released a new online recreational boating test, together with a completely rewritten and updated Recreational Boating Safety Handbook that can be picked up for free from any Service SA customer service centre. Anyone can use these tools to freshen up their boating knowledge or swat for a boat licence.

We’ll continue to look for new ways to support you to enjoy your boating while staying safe as possible – just keep an eye on On Deck to see the latest.

By working together I believe we can keep South Australia fatality-free and the envy of the other States for some time to come.
